“A conversation is a dialogue, not a monologue. That’s why there are so few good conversations: due to scarcity, two intelligent talkers seldom meet.” ~Truman Capote
There are two things in life you should never talk about with friends: politics, and religion. If you dare breech such subjects with friends, you’ll soon find that you have no friends.
I guess we’re breaking that old rule.
The New Inklings seeks to serve as a hub of conversation about one of those issues: religion. It all started when two friends, Aaron and Fran, discovered that they could talk about spiritual issues, disagree entirely, and still be great friends. And in case you didn’t get the point the first time, you’re not supposed to talk about religion with friends. It’s a flash point topic. It can, to put it nicely, ruin friendships. This should be especially true for Aaron and Fran.
Aaron is a Christian. Fran is an agnostic.
Yet, we still talk about religion. A lot. And we haven’t decided to kill each other.
We hope this site will serve to do the same for others, whether they’re religious or not. We will explore a lot of different topics and (the best part) give you the chance to join the conversation.
Before we jump into the conversation, we want to take this week to accomplish several things:
- Introduce ourselves. We want you to know where we’re coming from, and how we arrived at the positions we’re at today. You’ll hear from me (Aaron) later today, and tomorrow you’ll hear from Fran.
- Lay the ground rules. Thursday’s post will explain how a typical week will go here at The New Inklings. It would be a great idea to read the Pub Rules as they are vital to your participation in the conversation.
- Introduce Ye Olde Viral. On Friday we’ll introduce our recurring Friday theme. There’s no better way to end the week.
So do yourself a favor. Pull up a stool, pour a glass, and join the conversation.
